There is great power in it's influence.
"Music washes away from the souls the dust of everyday life." ~ Berthold Auerbach
For three or more years now we have struggled to make mornings for our oldest easier on him and our entire family. Something about this time of year puts him into overdrive and we find ourselves struggling to overcome an unknown opponent. Oh I play the guessing game, Does he miss his Birth Mom? Is it not that complicated, is he just not a morning person? Is it the threat of the unknown as the new school year begins? The need to be in control of something, anything outside himself? Could it be this time of year holds a wicked memory he will not share, but just makes him plain angry at life and anyone who dares enter his at the wrong moment? It is not fun to fight the unknown. It leaves you fumbling for answers, which weapon do I use to win this fight? There was an entire year a couple years ago where I did not want to get out of bed. I knew what was ahead and facing it took all the strength I had. I know why ostriches bury there heads in the sand, seriously...... The best way to not have to take responsibility, or face what is around you. It has escalated into other areas this past year. All previous tactics excluding that ace in the hole for all parents, the no reaction tool. Isn't it just so hard not to! It is, but I am almost a pro. I say almost because I am human and no one can take it in stride 100% of the time.

It was by I am sure not an accident at all that I ran across an article about a month ago, that I can't find again to save my life. This little tid bit (article) on music has made our life easier. The article praised the effect of music on our souls and hearts. I knew this, I grew up around music. It was everywhere in our home. My Dad set the mood each Sunday with music. Makes me wonder why I did not think of this all by myself, I needed a nudge. So I set out on a mission. I was going to set the mood in our home each day with music. Music with no words to detract from scripture study or needed instruction. Just a backdrop for our day. I chose piano music. Piano solos and piano renditions of fun songs we know. I went and bought a $20 boom box. Yep an 80"s boom box, we are so high tech around here. I hid it in the corner of the great room.
I turn it on each morning and it soothes our crazy morning souls. If I do not remember, my kids do. Has it fixed everything ,no. Does it set the mood and help us have a more peaceful start to our day, yes! I find myself leaving it on after the kids are gone and letting it continue to influence my day. It not only helps the child it was originally intended for it helps us as a whole. What a great blessing music is!!

I took that same boom box to work. Everyone laughed at me...told me I was "old school."
I am glad that you found something that helps you get through your morning. My house is stressful and I only have two kids. :)
what a smart idea! We may have to steal this one at our house....so far it has gone well. Moving to a new house where the TV is no longer in view of the dining room has helped a million times over as well!!! That, and i get to space out when they boys leave....30 minutes apart...PERFECT!
What a great idea! I love it!
I love music - I can't get through my day without some form! And I love that quote "Music is what feelings sound like" LOVE THAT!
What a great idea! I know when I'm feeling stressed I need to sit down at the piano and play. It helps. Also when Blaine was going through his "stuff", I'd listen to arrangements of hymns in the car to and from the hospital and it really gave me a sense of peace.
